Pamela Prah at Stateline.org has written a great article about social issues competing for attention during these dire economic times. Given the actions of Iowa and Vermont in the last seven days, gay marriage is an obvious example. But issues like medical marijuana (a guise for legalized drugs and mandatory minimums), capital punishment, abortions and right to die have been competing for agenda face-time in many state capitals around the country. “It’s very surprising that we’re seeing all this activity, when legislators were professing the need to focus on issues around budgets and the economy,” said Elizabeth Nash, a public policy associate for the Guttmacher Institute, an abortion-rights research group.
